New fuel station Willebroek
In Willebroek, construction of a new, sustainable filling station is currently underway. Two large fuel tanks are being installed behind the depot, with a combined capacity of 180,000 litres. These tanks, which are above ground and compartmentalised, fully comply with VLAREM regulations for environmentally friendly installations. The installation is expected to be operational by the end of January.
This new filling station will mainly offer Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a renewable diesel variant also known as green diesel. HVO is produced from biomass such as vegetable oils and animal fats, making it a more sustainable alternative to conventional diesel. A key advantage of HVO is that it can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90%. It also contributes to lower air pollution and is fully biodegradable, giving it a positive impact on the environment. The new filling station in Breendonk thus builds on an earlier project in Distrilog Olen, where a smaller HVO tank is already operational.
While the advantages of HVO are obvious, this fuel also has drawbacks. HVO is available in few places and its price is significantly higher than that of regular diesel. These costs and limited availability make HVO less accessible to a wider audience for the time being, but for the Distrilog trucks that operate daily in and around Breendonk, the new filling station offers a reliable and sustainable refuelling option.
The gas station project in Breendonk is now in the final phase of construction. The concrete foundation has just been poured and further completion is on schedule. When the tanks are fully operational by the end of January, this new filling station will be an important step towards more sustainable transport in the region.
